Student questions

Hear notes relative to the key or chord

Student’s question:

To understand music by ear, should we try to hear each note relative to the chord of the moment or relative to the overall key of the song?

How we approach this in IFR:

To understand music by ear, we should always focus on what our ear already perceives naturally. And your ear is actually aware of both of these relationships! (This is where so much of the beauty and richness of Western harmony comes from.) So this is what we want to begin to understand and see clearly.

In this video, David walks you through an example that will allow you to hear both aspects of the notes, and even shift between these two different kinds of awareness in your mind!
