Student questions

What resources can I use with my diatonic instrument

Student’s question:

I play the diatonic accordion so I cannot play all notes. I only have the notes of the C and G major scales. What IFR resources would you recommend for me?

Mireia’s response:

With your instrument you can explore the world that we call Pure Harmony, which is everything that we can create with just the seven notes and seven chords of the major scale. This is a whole universe of sounds that you can use to create music in any style or mood. Most of the songs that we hear in our daily lives are made from this material.

We explore this harmonic material in all of the following resources:

  • All of our “Seven Worlds” video courses*
  • All of our “Pure Harmony Essentials” video courses*
  • Ear Training for Musical Creativity 1
  • Ear Training for Musical Creativity 2
  • IFR Jam Tracks Level 1: Seven Worlds
  • IFR Jam Tracks Level 2: Pure Harmony Essentials
  • IFR Jam Tracks Level 3: Pure Harmony Advanced
  • Sing the Numbers 1: The Major Tonality
  • Sing the Numbers 2: The Minor Tonality
  • Sing the Numbers 3: Seven Worlds

*NOTE: In our instrument courses “Seven Worlds” and “Pure Harmony Essentials”, you’ll see that we practice our creative exercises in many different keys. But you can just capture the main ideas and explore these same concepts in the key(s) that are available to you on your instrument.

I want to emphasize that there is so much beautiful harmonic material here! I think you’ll be astonished by the diversity of soundscapes, moods and harmonies that you can create with this material. I invite you to relax into this beautiful world of Pure Harmony and to discover the music that you can create with all of these sounds.
